2022.01.17 04:09 Semiotic_Apocalypse 70s (or earlier) Movie with a robot in a medieval castle.
I'll be surprised if anyone knows this. I saw this on TV as a kid in the 70s and it felt a lot like a televised stage play. The actors were English and it might have been something on BBC at one time, though I remember seeing it on PBS at least twice.
It was set in a medieval past with some kind of Machiavellian political shenanigans. The king is given a robot as a gift, which somehow affects the political situation? The robot was a really boxy thing like the Marvin from the original Hitchhiker's Guide show.

2022.01.17 04:09 SeekOut101 Wouldn't a Presidential system be fiscally unsustainable for India?
TL,DR: For having a proper system of checks and balances in a Presidential system, we will need to hold mid-term elections like in the US. Wouldn't such a thing be fiscally prohibitive for India?
Note: I am asking this out of genuine curiosity. I do not intend to debate the proponents of Presidential system. For purposes of simplicity, I have also assumed certain things here. Feel free to correct my mistakes, if any.
I have been recently reading a couple of articles about the whole Parliamentary system vs Presidential system for India. I find this whole thing interesting and personally, I side with Parliamentary system with few modifications. However, I do concede that the Presidential system is better in some aspects like selection of technocrats as cabinet ministers. And I also like listening to some of the arguments put in favour of Presidential system. So with that spirit in mind, I would like to ask the proponents of Presidential system a question
Now, the whole rationale behind the Parliamentary vs Presidential system debate is about which system will make democracy better in India and defeat authoritarianism in India. IMO, to make a Presidential system really work, we will need to have a mid-term elections (in the middle of a President's term) as in the US.
This is to reduce chances of the President and majority party in Parliament being from the same party. Otherwise, I fear that a demagogue will run for President and get a large Parliamentary majority for his party if no mid-term elections exist. If mid-term elections exist, I think people will have enough time to gauge the President's performance and vote accordingly. And there would limit the demagogue's ability to some extent.
Having mid-term elections will also keep the President on his/her toes and ensure that they have to govern efficiently. It would also ensure a system of checks and balances.
Now, let's assume that both the President's and Parliament's term last for 5 years. So a mid-term election would mean that Parliamentary elections would be held 2.5 years into a President's term. And we would have a Presidential election 2.5 years into a Parliament's term. So basically, an election in every 2.5 years. So this would mean 4 parliamentary/presidential elections in a span of 10 years (10 years/2.5 years between each election=4). Under the current Parliamentary system, we would need 2 elections in 10 years (10 years/5 years Lok Sabha term= 2 elections).
60,000 crore or 600 billion rupees (about $8.07 billion) was spent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Since this is the most recent figure, I am using this as the cost of each election at the Union level. And for purposes of simple illustration, I am keeping the costs constant for each election (which of course is not true because costs will inevitably rise).
Cost of elections under Parliamentary system over 10 years= $8.07 billion*2 elections= $16.14 billion
Cost of elections under Presidential system over 10 years= $8.07 billion*4 elections= $32.28 billion
And this would just be at the Union level. What if Presidential system with mid-terms is implemented at the state levels too? Wouldn't such a system be financially prohibitive?
I would love to hear from the proponents of Presidential system on this.
PS: Please don't get into absurd extensions of my argument by saying "Elections are expensive, why don't we totally abolish them?" The fiscal costs of a Presidential system is not the main reason as to why I support a Parliamentary system, though it is one of the reasons.

2022.01.17 04:09 Ok_Welcome2688 Those that is earning below median, how is it going for you and what's your end game?
Long time lurker here.
Few weeks ago there is some threads that talks about the path to earning more than 100k and got great responses.
So now lets look the other way, i will start with myself.
- 30(M) and earning a basic pay of 2.5k
- Diploma holder only and choose to pursue passion in the arts sector
- Pay isnt much but really enjoy my job
- single and low expense, currently invest 700 to VWRA every month
- currently trying to work hard on online tutorials for side income (now earn about 500)
Posted this thread as i saw the other post that ask if it's normal for late 20s to take home 2.5k
In my circles, it's very normal. I've a friend who only have ITE cert, after working for 7 years in the same company, his pay is also only about 2.5k. Another friend who only have o lvl cert is abit more luckier, working in his aunt company and got about 3k now after about 10 years.
I really appreciate the things that i learn from this sub, started investing because i chance upon this sub.
So is there any more people like me in this sub? And what is your game plan? I wish for success for everyone that is reading here :)

2022.01.17 04:09 TheDBrewser Is it DSPD or am I just ill-disciplined?
I like many others on this sub frequently find myself going to sleep at 7am. But at the same time i am usually using my phone or laptop. I use the argument that 'I'm not tired at all and wouldn't be able to sleep regardless' when it is a normal time (22:00- midnight) but I feel like this is just an excuse to stay up late watching youtube etc. I have found that in short and inconsistent periods I am able to be asleep by 11 and awake by 7 (i keep this up for a maximum of a week before i gradually slip back into going to bed later and later) Does anyone else find they are similar? Am I just addicted to my phone?
